Cables sent from and to the U.S. State Department do nothing to dispel the suspicions of the Latvian community who followed the Hāzners case and surmised INS-Israeli-Soviet collusion. Collusion would appear a strong word, but knowing in hindsight that the INS stooped to misrepresentations and lies in its post-trial brief, we can only assume that the other parties to the "Hāzners is a Nazi" theatre were equally motivated.

Documents open in a new window.

  1. BOOK ON VOA, RFE, RL, ETC (September 29, 1975)Russian book "ANTENNAE ARE DIRECTED TO EAST" denounces Hāzners as a war criminal and head of the "military-fascist organization Daugavas Vanagi."

INDEED, DESPITE AN ALMOST STANDARD REQUEST IN EACH SOVIET NOTE FORWARDING DOCUMENTS TO BE INFORMED HOW THE DOCUMENTS ARE USED, THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT HARDLY EVER KNOWS WHAT HAPPENS TO THESE THINGS. SOVIET AUTHORITIES,HE SAID, ARE BEGINNING TO WONDER WHETHER EXTRAORDINARY EFFORTS, AS IN THE CASE OF VILIS HAZNERS, ARE WORTH IT GIVEN THE DEARTH OF POSITIVE RESULTS."

If the INS believed this was a Latvian editorial in a Latvian newspaper, they were gravely mistaken. (Aside from not having the correct date). The Nazis shut down the Latvian "Free Land" after one issue, and replaced it with the Nazi-produced "Fatherland" the same day they occupied Rīga, the Latvian capital.
